The building of the Aragonese Castle started in 1493/94, wanted by Alfonso of Aragon to fortify the Gulf of Pozzuoli against possible Saracen raids. It was completely modified by the Spanish, thanks to new military concepts in the field of fortifications, and for centuries it continued to be renovated for its military role. In 1887 it was declassified in civil unit by Royal Decree. Saving same irrelevant episodes from the historic-military point of view, the existence of the big castle was not needed. Nowadays it hosts the Phlegraean Archaeological Museum, where are showed some interesting archaeological findings, which allows to reconstruct the history of Cumae, Pozzuoli, Miseno, Bacoli, Liternum and Rione Terra.
The itineraries are very well-structured and the beautiful archaeological evidences are highlighted, giving them the proper artistic emphasis.
From the terraces and the ramparts is possible to enjoy beautiful sights.
